A Jam-Packed Summer of Travel
The Center had a jam-packed summer, with students and faculty embarking on journeys to five countries and regions. Whether it was a short-term intercultural exchange or a more extended independent study abroad, each participant returned home with a newfound appreciation for "culture".
Our first-ever excursion took us to France, a dream destination for many, where we visited La Croix Rouge La Sallie in Brest, a member school of the worldwide Lasallian network, and Saint-Denis International School in Loches. We were fully immersed through daily interactions in our host homes and classrooms and during excursions to local towns, chateaux, and monuments. By the end of our trip, we had become so integrated into the local culture that we often forgot we were in a different country. Although we had to bid farewell at the end of our journey, we knew our newfound friendships would endure. Our initial differences in "culture" merely hinted at our origins. Still, after ten short days, we shared connections, commonalities, and passion.
Our following two groups took on journeys to Taiwan and Korea, delving into Taiwanese aboriginal culture and fostering collaborative efforts to promote Peace and Citizenship alongside our Korean counterparts. During our time in Taiwan, our students had the unique opportunity to learn from Taiya tribe masters about traditional arts and skills that continue to thrive within various aboriginal communities and how it is intricately woven into the fabric of Taiwan's modern society. This experience reinforced the idea that "culture" is a precious treasure, with each distinct culture offering us valuable universally applicable insights.
In Korea, we investigated the history of the Korean War and how the enduring friendship between the U.S. and Korea has forged a strong and remarkable alliance between both nations. As we reflected on our actions and thoughts guided by this principle, we realized that when we join hands as friends and allies, our shared "culture" and mission extend beyond our individual boundaries, encompassing the quest for peace for all, not just for one group or another.
At the end of July, our last group of students traveled to Japan for a memorable cultural learning experience and a taste of diplomacy, while six Lancers took on independent studies in Valencia, Spain, focusing on language and cultural immersion. It is unanimously agreed that each of these experiences is truly "life-changing." Throughout this learning, we have developed a new obsession, a shared passion for deep connection with the new "culture," and a desire for more profound relationships.
To sum up, this past summer was undeniably dedicated to pursuing cultural discovery. We departed with something profound in our hearts and an insatiable passion for more. As we embark on new cultural adventures in the coming year, the Center eagerly invites more students, faculty, and families to join our worldwide expedition for an enriching journey. We hope your cultural exploration will be marked by moments of discovery, meaningful connections, and joyous celebrations.
