- Describe what your club/organization is about and what you do
Science Outreach is exclusively devoted to service. Its mission is to promote an interest in science by exposing junior high school students from the local schools to various lab activities and experiments. These outreach sessions (science nights) are designed and presented by the club members themselves. Many of these labs involve activities and equipment that are not normally accessible to junior high students.
- How many students are involved?
We currently have close to 40 members. Many of our members in past years were guests themselves in science nights prior to their matriculation to La Salle College Prep. We actively work with the National Science Honors Society; many of our club members are members of both organizations, Science Outreach and SNHS.
- Favorite activity/event of the year (or greatest achievement)
Last year we hosted over 100 students from the local junior schools. The theme was the importance of color. We used electrophoresis to separate different colored dyes and applied the flame test to different dissolved salts into order to identify the correct mineral.
In the 23 years that I have moderated the club, we have conducted a whole array of diverse experiments such a DNA extraction, pH testing, water bottle rockets and water bottle cars, crushing can, egg drop, microscopy, and many others that are too numerous to list. These evenings have made big impact on our guests.
- Things you would like to do in the future
We plan to host a science night sometime in February and are in the planning stages .
