The Dr. Richard Gray Memorial San Miguel Scholarship Fund was established in 2020 to honor the life and leadership of Dr. Richard Gray, who served La Salle College Preparatory with compassion and dedication for more than twenty years. As president, Dr. Gray strengthened the school’s academic and co curricular programs, expanded access to a quality Lasallian education, and championed opportunities for students across the San Gabriel Valley.
Dr. Gray was instrumental in advancing the San Miguel Scholarship Program, which provides full tuition support for students whose families live below the federal poverty line. His belief in the transformative power of education and his commitment to supporting young people helped shape the program into a cornerstone of La Salle’s mission. Today, gifts to the Dr. Richard Gray Memorial San Miguel Scholarship Fund exceed one million dollars, a testament to his lasting influence and the deep respect and gratitude felt throughout our community.
Dr. Gray was a pillar of La Salle, known for his warm presence, genuine laugh, and unwavering care for faculty, staff, students, and alumni. His legacy lives on through this scholarship, which continues his work of opening doors for students with significant financial need and providing them with life changing educational opportunities.
Supporting this fund honors Dr. Gray’s extraordinary service and ensures that his spirit of compassion, leadership, and Lasallian commitment will continue to guide future generations of La Salle students.
The Jon Clarke Keates Memorial Scholarship honors the life and legacy of Jon Keates, who served La Salle College Preparatory with exceptional dedication as Chief Philanthropic Advisor to the President and Director of Advancement from 2012 until his passing in 2024. Jon’s visionary leadership transformed the school’s philanthropic landscape, significantly increasing annual giving and supporting major capital improvements across campus. His work helped strengthen academic programs, enhance facilities, and expand access for students with financial need.
Among his most meaningful contributions was his commitment to the San Miguel Scholarship Program, including the establishment of the Dr. Richard Gray Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund. In recognition of Jon’s deep belief in educational opportunity, gifts to the Jon Clarke Keates Scholarship Fund directly support San Miguel Scholars, ensuring that students from families with the greatest financial need can benefit from the life-changing opportunities of a Lasallian education.

In 2000, Christian Brother schools across the United States were asked to establish San Miguel Scholarship Programs providing full-tuition support for students whose family income fell at or below the federal poverty line. This initiative called schools to further embody the mission of St. John Baptist de La Salle, who dedicated his life to making education accessible for all, especially those most in need.
Thanks to the generosity of donors, La Salle College Preparatory fully embraced this charge and welcomed its first cohort of San Miguel Scholars in the fall of 2000. Twenty-six years later, the Class of 2026 will celebrate the twenty-second graduating class of San Miguel Scholars, marking more than two decades of life-changing opportunity made possible through this program.
Since its establishment, the San Miguel Scholarship Program has supported more than 190 students, helping them access a Lasallian education rooted in faith, service, and academic excellence. San Miguel Scholars have gone on to attend over 70 colleges and universities, including Stanford University, Caltech, UC Berkeley, Northwestern University, the University of Notre Dame, USC, and NYU. Their achievements reflect the power of what this program makes possible.
Today, San Miguel alumni are serving and leading across a wide range of industries, truly living out La Salle’s motto to Learn, Serve, and Lead. Graduates are contributing their talents at organizations such as Ernst & Young, Deloitte, Meta, Netflix, Los Angeles General Medical Center, and the Los Angeles Dodgers, among many others. Their success is a testament to the transformative impact of the San Miguel Scholarship and the strength of the La Salle community that stands behind it.
The Sylvia Bernstein Memorial Golf Fund was established in loving memory of Sylvia Bernstein, whose life was tragically lost in 2002. In the midst of profound grief, her husband, Monty Bernstein, sought a meaningful way to honor Sylvia’s life, her love for family, and her passion for the game of golf.
Their son, Blake ’02, was a dedicated member of La Salle’s golf team, and the program played a significant role in his high school experience. Recognizing the positive impact the golf program had on Blake’s life, and grateful for the support La Salle provided during a difficult time, the Bernstein family chose to create a lasting tribute that would benefit future generations of student-athletes.
The Sylvia Bernstein Memorial Golf Fund provides annual support for La Salle’s Boys and Girls Golf Teams, helping ensure that students continue to learn, compete, and grow through the sport that meant so much to Sylvia and her family.
“In honor of Sylvia, and as a tribute to the enduring bond between La Salle and our family, I made a heartfelt donation to the school’s golf program. I encourage others to support this endowed fund, which will help support both La Salle golf teams every year.”
— Monty Bernstein P’02
This fund celebrates Sylvia’s memory and strengthens the future of La Salle’s golf program, providing opportunities for student-athletes to flourish both on and off the course.
