La Salle College Preparatory is proud to announce a generous $100,000 pledge from Ms.
Thanh Hoang in support of the Jon Clarke Keates Memorial San Miguel Scholarship, a fund
established to honor the extraordinary life and legacy of Jon Keates.

Jon Keates served La Salle with exceptional dedication as Chief Philanthropic Advisor to the
President and Director of Advancement from 2011 until his passing in April 2024. A visionary
leader, Jon transformed the school’s philanthropic landscape, elevating annual giving, advancing major capital improvements, and expanding access to a La Salle education for students with financial need. His work strengthened academic programs, enhanced campus facilities, and ensured that more students could benefit from the transformative power of a Lasallian education.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jon was a singular presence in the community,
charismatic, brilliant, and unforgettable. Born in Hackensack, New Jersey, and educated at
Brown University, with doctoral studies at Duke, Jon built a distinguished career in both
academia and advancement leadership at institutions including the University of Chicago,
Claremont McKenna College, Occidental College, and USC. Known for his wit, intellect, and
unmatched command of language, he left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Among Jon’s most meaningful contributions at La Salle was his deep commitment to the San
Miguel Scholarship Program, which provides life-changing opportunities to students from
families with the greatest financial need. His belief in educational access continues to inspire the mission of this memorial fund.

Thanh’s gift ensures that Jon’s legacy will live on through the students whose lives will be
shaped by this scholarship. Her gift stands as both a tribute to Jon’s enduring impact and a
powerful investment in the future of La Salle students.
